How to Decipher Junk from Valuables

It is very difficult to decipher junk from valuables when cleaning out your home or garage. And, it’s even harder when helping a loved one that is transitioning to a new home to decipher what to keep, throw away or donate.

What items have value and should be kept? Alternatively, what items have lost value and are worth getting rid of? Are the items valuable enough to donate? Most people will face this at some point in their lives. Fortunately, a reliable junk removal service or home organization company can provide advice about what to keep and what to get rid of.

What is Junk?

Junk could include items like nonworking electronics or appliances, old furniture or mattresses, broken outdoor furniture, or items you just don’t need or have a value anymore. By asking yourself the following questions, you can help yourself decide if an item is junk or worth keeping:

  • Are you tired of looking at the item? If so, the item probably isn’t worth keeping in your home.

  • Will Goodwill or the Salvation Army take the item? If so, use this opportunity to donate the item to a charity. And, as a bonus, this will give you a tax write-off!

  • Does the item still serve its original purpose? If not, it’s probably time to get rid of it.

  • Does the item represent an important part of your family’s history? If so, you should consider keeping it.

  • Have you tried to sell the item before without success? In this case, you should consider parting with it.

  • When was the last time you used the item? When do you anticipate using it again? If it has been a long time since the last use, or if you don’t anticipate using it again, get rid of it! However, if you identify an occasion within the next 6 months or year in which you’ll use the item (like some old Thanksgiving decorations, for example), consider saving the item for a little longer.

Test the Market

If you aren’t sure about the value of a particular item, test the market to see how much people would be willing to pay for it. Take pictures of the item and post them to an online marketplace like Let Go, Poshmark, Thred Up, or Facebook Marketplace. Set a high price and see if anyone is willing to buy it.

If so, you can go through with the sale and make some money, or you can continue to hold onto the item now that you know it has value. Check out our other blog on selling your valuable items: 4 Great Ways to Get Rid of Clutter and Make Some Money Too!
