Getting and Staying Clutter-Free

Starting the organization process can be daunting but it doesn’t have to be! As a Professional Organizer, I am always asked “how do I get started”? Well….here are some my favorite tips for getting started and staying on top of clutter. Happy Organizing!!

One at a Time

Take it one project at a time. Start with a small area and complete it. Don’t move on to another project till it’s done. This will allow you to have one completed area and it will give you some “steam” to keep going. Also seeing your great results will keep you motivated to do more.

Know what you’re keeping and what’s going

Decide what you are keeping and what’s going first. Organization is about using the space you have in the most productive way. So, unless you are building more closets, cabinets or storage areas your current space is limited. Know what’s most important before you start. Unfortunately, paring down is a key component to using that space the best way possible. So be prepared to Let Go!

Only touch something ONCE (technically it may be twice, but you’ll get my point)

Set up a sorting area. Whether it’s rolling racks for clothing organization or your kitchen table for organizing items from a closet or drawer. Having the space to sort and view your items will make the process more efficient. Then group items accordingly…. Keep, Go, Donate. This will help you stay organized and keep you from re-sorting the same items multiple times.

Measure first

When buying storage container and organizers, it’s very important to measure your space before you buy. Don’t impulse buy organization items, wait till you know exactly how much space you have and how you intend to use that space. This will save you the trip to return them, if they don’t fit.

Do a little every day

If you spent a whole weekend organizing your garage, you want to keep it that way. Think of your old habits and how you plan on making changes. My 96-year-old grandmother instilled this in me from a young age and it’s still my favorite piece of advice. Putting 3 things back (where they belong) is much easier than re-organizing everything all over again.

And……. If all else fails, get HELP. You can always hire a professional organizer or “junk” removal expert such as HBS Junk Removal. We offer many options to help you get and stay organized. Even if it’s just removing those unwanted items for you. You will be amazed at how much better you feel when the project is complete.
